Victorian Era Hand Painted Tile of Baby Chicks

$ 79.00

A nice Victorian era tile hand painted with an image of baby chicks playing with shafts of wheat. It measures 6" square and is in good condition with little roughness around the edges and traces of mortar on the back. These would be hidden if framed. On the back one edge had been purposely chipped back when it was installed into a fireplace surround.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's china painting was a popular pastime. It was one of the few ways an upper middle class woman could earn a reputable living. Magazines, classes and home kilns were marketed to hobbyists. women would decorate tiles or pieces of pottery for themselves or for sale to others.
