Gien Tile Japonais #3 With Peony Flowers

A beautiful tile in the emaux cloisonné technique of lovely pink peony flowers amid gracefully swirling stems and leaves against a brilliant blue background. Made by Gien in the Loire Valley of France during the late 19th century they were contemporaries of Longwy and Creil-Monterau in making these wonderful ceramic versions of Eastern cloisonné metal. The "Japanese" tile measures 7 3/4" square and 3/8" thick. The back is marked "GIEN" and " Japonais No 3" and is in very good condition with slight wear to the high points of the blue decoration and a small chip on the upper right corner.

Also known as the ‘King of Flowers’, the peony is a Japanese flower that is used as a symbol of good fortune, bravery, and honor. It is often used in tattoos to signify a devil-may-care attitude.
